Hardwood Lumber Sizing (The Quarter System)
Hardwood — oak, maple, walnut, the stuff that ends up in furniture and the occasional over-ambitious garden gate — plays by different rules. It's sold in "quarters," where each quarter just means a quarter-inch of rough thickness before anybody planes it smooth. So a "4/4" board starts life at about an inch thick rough, and an "8/4" board starts at about two inches. We learned this on a potting bench build, ordering 4/4 oak expecting something close to furniture-flat stock and getting a rougher, thicker slab that ate way more sanding time than we'd budgeted for the weekend.

Standard Lengths and Tolerances
Length is the one spec that actually holds steady — a board tagged 8 feet is going to be at least 8 feet, full stop. It might sneak a little longer, since mills get some wiggle room on the long side and none at all on the short side, which, if you think about it, is the exact opposite of how every road trip we've ever planned has gone.

Historical Context of Lumber Standardization
So why the gap between the name on the tag and the board in your hands? It's a hundred-year-old holdover. Nearly a century ago, a "2x4" really was cut close to 2 by 4 inches — a rough, green piece straight off the saw. But by the time those boards were dried and planed smooth, they'd shrunk toward the 1½ × 3½ we know today, and the old nominal name just... stuck. That gap is still exactly what trips people up in the lumber aisle. It got contentious enough that, a few years back, consumer groups actually sued several big-box stores and hardware chains over it, arguing the lumber was flat-out undersized for what the tag claimed.
